Paint tiles: give the old tile mirror a new, trendy look

Tiling Painting and painting is becoming increasingly popular today, and it’s not by chance – it’s faster, cleaner and cheaper to paint the old tiles in any color than to remove them and lay new ones in their place. In this case, the time required is less, and you have the noise, Baustab and all the bothersome craftwork saved – it just sounds fascinating, right? Actually, it’s not at all difficult to give the bathroom or kitchen a fresh new look and to cover up the old, ugly tile design with some paint – read our guide to make sure!

Painting tiles: what you should think about in advance?

Before you start brushing, you should think about it: first decide which color or color you want to use – with 2 or 3 different tones you can create original accents. If you are staying for rent, you should also discuss the renovation with your landlord. And last but not least – plan to paint for at least 3 days. This time might seem too much to you at first glance, but it is necessary for the drying of the individual layers of paint. When painting, be sure to use gloves – the colors often contain solvents that attack the skin. Apply the paint with a foam roller – this is how it works easily and regularly, and would be very successful even for beginners.

Painting tiles – preparatory work

Before painting, you should thoroughly clean the tile surface – preferably with a tile cleaner, so that it is completely clean, free of grease and dry. If there is silicone in the movement joints, this should also be removed – with a silicone remover or sharp knife. After painting, they are filled again. The joints can actually be painted over with the paint, but to prevent cracks, it is best to use joint white. You would get a great decorative effect by highlighting the joints with a different hue, which you can only do after painting.

Protect the bathroom furniture from splashes

When painting, unfortunately, you have no way to clear the bathroom furniture from the room, because they are permanently installed. To protect the shower, bath and toilet from splashes, it is best to spread a protective foil. Of course, you also have the option to paint the sanitary facilities with the same color – in this case, it is sufficient to cover only all fittings, such as taps, with some foil.

Apply a primer

In order to paint the tiles as you like, you need a primer in addition to the chosen shade, so that the color will last well afterwards. For this purpose, the Epoxidhartlacke be preferred. The primer is applied again before the paint with a foam roller. Allow to dry completely before painting – the drying time will be at least 16 hours (read the manufacturer’s instructions on the packaging!). Before you start painting, you should do something important – check the joints. Apply a little bit of sealing varnish, and if you find that it will rinse, the joints are not suitable for painting! In this case you can either stick some insulating tape on it and not paint it, or buy a special jointing material with which you can paint your joints.

Delete tiles: how are you?

Let’s start with tile painting! The special exopide varnishes used for this purpose consist of a varnish and a hardener which should be mixed well together. It is recommended to let the mixture work for about 15 minutes and stir well again (it is important to read the manufacturer’s instructions carefully again). Every painting job has an important rule: work from top to bottom, and from left to right, like writing. In this way you avoid the risk that splashes fall from the upper to the already painted lower area and unwanted drops are formed. After applying the first coat, let it dry out for at least 12 hours. For a good coverage of the tiles, you should apply two, sometimes even three layers of lacquer. However, if you also like the look of the tiles after the first painting – the old paint would float through the new one, you can also refrain from applying a second coat of paint. If you think you’re done painting, let the paint harden properly – it will take about three days. During this time you can renew the silicone and fill the joints with joints with joint white or another color. Then the bathroom can be used again!

The care for the newly painted tiles

The new paint you put on the tile is a bit more delicate than the original tile design. Therefore, it is recommended to keep the new look as long as possible, to use only milder detergents, and to dispense with scouring agents, which would coat the paint surface very easily.
